Doña Luz Mila is a devoted first-generation coffee farmer who has been cultivating coffee since 2008. One of the most significant challenges during harvest season is finding enough labour to pick the ripe cherries. Fortunately, they are part of a close-knit community of fellow coffee growers who come together to support one another, helping with the harvest and transporting the cherries to the local associations.
About
Doña Luz Mila, a first-generation coffee farmer, has been cultivating coffee since 2008 alongside her husband, Eider. She owns two farms in Gaitania, Tolima: El Oasis (10 hectares, 1750 m.a.s.l.) and El Recreo (4 hectares, 1600 m.a.s.l.), where she grows traditional Colombian varieties such as Castillo, Caturra, Colombia, and Typica.
Though raised in the city, Luz Mila always dreamed of living on a farm, growing her own food, and caring for the land. After traveling and working across Colombia with her husband, they settled in Tolima and joined the local coffee-growing community. With a loan from the bank, she purchased El Oasis, her first farm, and began learning to grow coffee with the guidance of her neighbors. It took several years of overcoming challenges before she felt proud of the coffee she was producing. Committed to sustainability, she transitioned to organic farming and, after eight years, earned Organic certification.
In addition to coffee, Luz Mila cultivates beans and fruit trees like mandarin. She also runs a family business in town selling clothing and beauty products. Luz Mila is an active participant in local coffee competitions, where her coffee consistently ranks among the finalists.
One of the biggest challenges she faces is finding labor during harvest season, but her close-knit community of coffee growers supports one another in picking and transporting cherries. Luz Mila and Eider have four children—two boys and two girls—who love spending time on the farm and helping when they can. Family is at the heart of their life, and they cherish meals together at the dinner table.
This coffee was carefully harvested following strict ripeness criteria, floated, and hand-sorted to remove defects. The cherries underwent 30 hours of underwater fermentation, were pulped, gently washed, and dried under controlled conditions to achieve the perfect moisture content.
The variety
This microlot is 100% Caturra, a natural mutation of Red Bourbon that originated in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Known for its compact size and high yield, Caturra allows for denser planting and easier harvesting. It thrives at 1,200–1,800 meters above sea level. While it offers higher productivity than Bourbon, it lacks strong resistance to coffee leaf rust, making cultivation challenging in certain regions. Despite this, Caturra remains popular in Colombia and Central America.
